Fi - Hi Podcast Ep 24 : Ana da Silva on The Velvet Underground & Nico
Ana da Silva is a songwriter and founding member of the influential London-based post punk band The Raincoats. Formed in 1977 while college students, the band were signed to the legendary Rough Trade and their debut was produced by label owner Geoff Travis and Mayo Thompson of the Red Krayola. The Raincoats count Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Peaches and many more as admirers and Kurt Cobain included their 1979 eponymous debut on his top 50 favorite albums list. Countless new fans were introduced to the magic of The Raincoats after he wrote about them at length in the liner notes to Nirvana’s 1992 compilation Incesticide. Cobain also composed the liner notes to the reissue of their debut album, stating “If it weren’t for the luxury of putting that scratchy copy of The Raincoats’ first record on, I would have had very few moments of peace.” While their last album was released in 1996, the band still perform sporadically to this day.
